Geothermal heat pump software typically falls into two types and categories:

1. Residential and Commercial applications
   
2. Economic Comparison or Design & Sizing

Economic comparison or energy analysis programs are often offered by geothermal heat pump manufacturers. Such programs can be highly detailed while others may be easier - providing screening-only comparisons. Screening programs are intended to simply identify where a geothermal heat pump system may offer economic and other advantages. A residential and a commercial screening analysis program and users manual are available from Apogee Interactive, Inc and from various geothermal equipment manufacturers.

Design and Sizing programs address more complicated issues. The sizing of ground-coupled heat pumps and ground exchangers, or ground loops, is a complex procedure that can best be done by computer. Design software rescues you from tedious calculations and minimizes possible errors in design values figured by hand.

Residential system designs can be done using heat pump manufacturer-supplied software, or using programs such as CLGS and Right-Loop.
